History

SINULOG FESTIVAL of Cebu is one of the grand festivities in the country. With spectacular and colorful street dancing, the people of Cebu as well as from other parts of the Philippines and the outside gather every 3rd Sunday of January to honor, gratify, and praise the Holy Child of Jesus (Senor Sto Nino). Lavish costumes, breath-taking choreographies, and deafening cheers from the devotees grace the streets of Cebu during the mardi-gras. Several contigents from Cebu and outside offer their "prayer dance" to the Senyor Santo Nino. One of the Sinulog-fan favorite contigents is the Lumad Basakanon.

With great devotion and gratitude to the Holy Child, Barangay Captain from Basak San Nicolas Cebu City, Honorable George Rama, sought the expertise of Barangay Councilor NORMAN A. NAVARRO, who happens to be good choreographer, and his brother, DENNIS NAVARRO, head of a Drum and Bugle Corps called the CADENCE. 1990, Lumad Basakanon was born.

Throughout the years the troupe garnered respect and honor, not just "bringing home the bacon" for being the first to be elevated in Aliwan Hall of Fame last 2008, but for the love and faith to the Holy Child Jesus, Senyor Santo Nino.

The following list is an array of different award that the Lumad received and the contributions they shared to the religious and cultural traditions that shaped the faith of Cebuanos and the World. With the the graces and answered prayers from the Divine Providence and support from the local government of Cebu, Lumad will continue to hold its laurel of excellence in offering their faith and love to Santo Nino.
